A Ventricular Assist Device is a ventricular assist system that supports the contractile function of the left ventricle. This requires the patient’s right ventricle to be functioning well. Unfortunately, sometimes the cardiac surgeon is faced with a biventricular dysfunction.

In those cases, it is not possible to use a VAD, and a total artificial heart must be implanted.
