Blood: a team always on the move
Blood is a living tissue made up of millions of cells that work together to keep the body healthy.
- Red blood cells are like tiny couriers: they carry oxygen from the lungs to all the organs and bring carbon dioxide back to be eliminated through breathing. They are so specialized in this task that they don’t even have a nucleus!
- White blood cells are the bodyguards. They recognize and attack viruses and bacteria that could make us ill.
- Platelets step in when we get a cut or injury: they quickly gather and help the blood clot, forming a small “patch” that seals the leak.
Every drop of blood contains silent, constant and precious work… a small community that works tirelessly to help us live, breathe, and heal.
Heart: a team working in unison
The heart muscle is made up of special cells called cardiomyocytes.
These cells have a branched shape and are connected to one another like a large network.
Between each cell are very important meeting points called intercalated discs: it is thanks to these “bridges” that the cells can communicate and coordinate with each other.
When the heart beats, millions of cardiomyocytes contract together, at the very same moment.
This allows the heart to function as a single, tireless pump, capable of pushing blood throughout the body without ever stopping.
Every beat you hear is the result of this extraordinary, invisible collaboration. A perfect symphony that accompanies our life from the first to the very last moment.
Inside the lungs: where air meets blood
The lung tissue is made up of countless tiny air sacs called alveoli.
It is right here that something essential for our life takes place: gas exchange.
Each alveolus is lined with an extremely thin layer of cells, so thin that it allows the oxygen in the air to enter the blood, while carbon dioxide leaves it to be expelled during exhalation.
Between the alveoli there is an elastic network of collagen and elastin fibers.
Thanks to this structure, the lungs can inflate and deflate with every breath.
