Anomaly and Norm
The Adaptability of Life Between Anatomy and Biology
Third Room. Normal and Abnormal: a Blurred Border That Changes Over Time
Today anomalies, except those clearly identifiable as pathological, are considered indexes of “diversification”, at the base of the irreplaceable singularity of each human being. The environment that is around us plays a fundamental role in defining what we consider “normal” and “abnormal”, but also the human cultures elaborate rules and judgements that set the boundaries between what is acceptable and what is rejected, influencing our perceptions and our behaviors:what is considered “normal” in a context, indeed, could be seen as “abnormal” in another context. This rules change through space and time, being originated in different historical, economic and social conditions: what could have been perceived as abnormal 100 years ago today could be considered perfectly normal.
